- Calgary condo residents get all-clear despite sinkhole - Calgary Herald
CALGARY - Tony Dossett has never been so happy just to sit at home and do nothing. For four nights, he was forced to stay in a hotel and live out of a duffel bag, wondering when it would be safe to return to his Beltline condo.
The 48-year-old Dossett received word Tuesday that the sinkhole that forced him and 12 other tenants out of their homes Friday had been filled and that the building was structurally sound.
"I'm just sitting here with my feet up enjoying being in my own apartment,"he said. "I am really glad to be here."
Dossett said it is not yet clear who is expected to pay for his hotel bill, but he plans on expensing it, and several other incidentals.
"My hotel downtown, my food, my transportation and any expenses I incurred for having to move, I will be adding up," said Dossett, who has lived in the building since 1994.
Central Park Manor residents were told to leave the complex in the 300 block of 13th Avenue S. W. Friday night after a sinkhole was discovered in a parking lot.
An engineering report re-leased Tuesday by the city determined the site is stable.
"There is ongoing monitoring," said Kevin Griffiths, the city's manager of building regulations.
An engineering report from the owners of an adjacent development project found the 3.5 metre-by-three-metre sinkhole, which had been filled with gravel, had been stabilized.
Dossett isn't convinced the building is stable. "You can see daylight through the bricks (of the walls)," he said.
Friday's discovery marked the third time in 10 months a hole has been found near the site. The first appeared last July, when a sinkhole in the back parking lot forced an evacuation.
The second was found last fall on 2nd Street, between 13th and 14th avenues.
The development next door, Centuria on the Park, broke ground 18 months ago, but is still a hole in the ground. No connection has been reported between the development and the holes.
Today, the city will conduct an inspection of another Belt-line sinkhole that has closed 4th Street S. W. between 10th and 11th avenues.
