- GenerationXbuyers to replace boomers - Calgary Herald
For a few different reasons, a national real estate agency says generation X is poised to replace baby boomers as the main demographic buying up recreational properties.
In a recent report, Re/ Max says most of the 50 Canadian markets it surveyed this year "reported a marked trend toward 30-something buyers snapping up affordablypriced product, ranging from waterfront cottages to resort condominiums, compared to just 40 per cent in 2008."
Part of the reason, Re/Max said, is the growing financial strength of generation Xers -- those born between 1965 and 1980--who have been "priced out of most markets for the gional director for Ontario and the Atlantic, says in a statement.
As well, Re/Max says this generation is able to take advantage of the lower prices that have developed as a result of the recent economic downturn.
The agency also said generation X is drawn to recreation properties because of lifestyle choice more so than as investment opportunities.
"The purchase of a waterfront home or a condominium is more than a simple transaction to gen-X purchasers," Elton Ash, Re/Max's regional executive vice-president for Western Canada, sayz in statement. "Owning a recreation property underscores their dedication to family and balance."
