Wednesday, July 29, 2009 - Canadian housing markets becoming more balanced- Calgary Sun

Two recent housing reports — one from ReMax and the other from RBC Economics — indicate housing markets across the country have strengthened in the second quarter of 2009, after seven months of uncertainty and weak sales performance. The ReMax report says more balanced market conditions emerged in the last three months, ending the hold buyers have enjoyed since last September, with the two largest markets, Toronto and Vancouver, recording MLS sales in June that were among the highe ... Ward 3, the domain of Ald. Jim Stevenson, had the largest population growth in the last 12 months, while Ward 9, patrolled by Ald. Joe Ceci, experienced the largest decline. I can’t say whether the aldermen were responsible for the population shifts in their wards, but it’s just a bit of the many fun facts and figures to be found in the City of Calgary census for 2008/2009, released last week. Here are a few of the highlights. Who’s on the move? Net migration — the d ... Full Article...

When it comes to financing your first home — or any home purchase for that matter — not all mortgages are created equal. “Just as short and long term goals should drive your financial and investment plans, the same holds true when choosing the right mortgage to meet your individual needs and circumstances,” says Attif Sayani, personal banking manager at Scotiabank’s Country Hills Town Centre branch. Monday, July 20, 2009 - Housing construction numbers healthier - Calgary Herald

Calgary’s housing market is beginning to look more like a typical residential construction environment — except for the numbers. After two straight monthly increases in construction starts of single-family homes, there was a slight decline in June — something that historically happens at this time of year. Work started on 374 detached homes last month — not far off the 450 starts for June 2008 — a small decrease from this May’s 382 starts, says Canada Mortg ... Full Article...

Monday, July 20, 2009 - Beware of toxic drywall - Calgary Herrald

You might have heard recently about toxic drywall that was distributed in North America and used in thousands of homes. This drywall was made in China, and it emits toxic hydrogen sulphide, sulphur dioxide and other gases. Humidity in the air — whether it’s from the weather or from indoor moisture — causes the sulphur in the drywall to offgas, which stinks (sulphur smells like rotten eggs) and causes health problems like eye irritation, trouble breathing, headaches and sore t ... CALGARY - Christina Haggerty sensed the housing market was turning around, but after finding a home for a recent client, the Calgary realtor said the signs are now unmistakable. “Anything we saw right away had competing offers or it was sold the next day,” she said. “It was crazy, definitely the stampede was around the $400,000 to $500,000 range.” It’s not the heady days of 2007, but after last fall’s doldrums, confidence is definitely returning to the hou ... Monday, July 13, 2009 - PURCHASERS FAVOURED - Calgary Herald

Question: Does a buyers’ market mean it’s the right time for an individual person to buy? Answer: A decrease in existing home sale prices, low mortgage rates and an increase in the number of homes listed for sale have created what some are calling a buyers’ market. That can be good news for potential homeowners. But buying a home is easily one of the biggest purchases of your life.
